The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service has issued a Proposed Rule to remove 11 products from the National List of organic exemptions. The prohibitions would take effect on the sunset date of June 27, 2017

The USDA through the National Organic Program (NOP) manages a National List of (a) synthetic substances that may be used and (b)  nonsynthetic substances that may not be used in organic production

Synthetic substances are to be removed from exemption:

  • lignin sulfonate
  • furosemide
  • magnesium carbonate

Nonsynthetic to be removed from exemption:

  • Chia
  • Dillweed oil
  • Frozen galangal
  • Inulin
  • Frozen lemongrass
  • Chipotle chile peppers
  • Turkish bay leaves
  • Whey protein concentrate
